Organization Where You Will Be Volunteering
Aventuras Naturales Yorkin is an association of organic producers which was formed in 1996 with the main idea of improving organic agricultural production so the community could have a better income. The group was formed by 15 families of the Yorkin indigenous community. Aventuras Naturales Yorkin is located in the Indigenous Reserve of Talamanca in the community of Corriente Grande. They began volunteer programs and the acceptance of tourists after a local Costa Rica trade show, which explained how tourism could improve the living conditions of its members and their families while still keeping a clear idea of conservancy and protection of the environment in general.
Location
The Yorkin community is located in Corriente Grande in the Watsi District of Talamanca County in the province of Limon. The site corresponds to the rainforest and is included within La Amistad Conservation Area. The trip is taken from Bri-Bri to the Bambu Community on a gravel road that winds parallel to the Sixaola River. It takes about two hours floating down the Telire River which merges into the Sixaola and then to the point where it joins the Yorkin River. In this up-river direction there’s a great chance for fantastic scenery as well as a natural relaxing sensation. Upon arrival, Don Guillermo and Dona Otilia, representatives of the Aventuras Naturales Yorkin, will assist you and inform you about the upcoming events.
Highlights
Highlights include: living and working at an established indigenous preserve in an important wildlife corridor in the middle-high elevations between Costa Rica and Panama; helping to improve the way of living for the local people in the area; gaining a wide variety of skills, including learning about sustainability and production of tropical organic products and gaining real field experience with the chance of improving Spanish skills; working with children and teenagers sharing the knowledge of English or simply sharing educational methods; working in an area without road access, traveling by motor boat and canoes along stunning river networks; living a low impact lifestyle and seeing the rewards in the behavior and appreciation of the locals; experiencing the beauty of the region from sunrise to sunset and more.
Field Conditions
Accommodations are pleasantly rustic with a tent camp style in a beautiful clearing of the forest surrounded by the indigenous community. All food will be prepared by the natives on a traditional basis, and basic but typically local food will be the staple diet. There is a solar panel for electricity part of the day in the main building, hand washing laundry facilities, and running (cold) water, which means there are flushing toilets and refreshingly cool showers.
