Arenal 1968 Hike

The 1968 hike can be a guided Expedition, or you can take it yourself. The trails are well-marked, and they show different types of vegetation. If traveling on a bright day, the views of the Arenal Volcano and the Arenal lake are beautiful.

There are two trails, yellow and red. They vary in the distance as well as scenery and difficulty. Both begin as an accessible path, but it turns out rocky and steep as you advance on your hike. Depending on the hiker’s pace, the whole loop can take one hour and a half to three hours. If you have walking difficulties, you probably want to skip this trail. The same applies to those who have asthma.

When visiting these privately owned preserves, there is no limitation on how long you want to be in their trails. However, all these places have a set time to take the last tour (typically 3:30 pm). They also recommend being within the limits of the trails for safety reasons.

Concerning what kind of wildlife is present at this property, the possibilities exist in the rest of the country. However, if you are loud while on the trails or do not have a guide who can help spot different animals, it can get difficult to see that much. On the other hand, there is a substantial presence of birds that inhabit the secondary growth, so you will be in the right place if you are a bird lover.

Make sure to pack plenty of water, suntan lotion, binoculars, and mosquito repellent, and if you are allergic to bees, please keep your EpiPen handy as in any other trail.
